Gold Plated, Gold Filled or Solid Gold
Gold plated is a thin gold layer on another metal. Gold filled is a thicker gold layer bonded to a core. Solid gold is gold all the way through. Atolio Vegas makes 18k gold plated over 316L stainless steel.
What the three constructions actually mean
All three can look identical in a photograph. What differs is how much gold there is and how it is attached, and that decides both the price and the lifespan.
Gold plated means a layer of gold deposited onto a base metal. The karat number describes the purity of the gold in that layer, not how thick the layer is. Two pieces can both be honestly described as 18k gold plated and wear very differently.
Gold filled means a sheet of gold alloy mechanically bonded under heat and pressure to a base metal core. The gold layer is substantially thicker than a plated one, which is the entire point of the construction, and it takes longer to wear through.
Solid gold means the piece is a gold alloy throughout. There is no layer and nothing to wear off. An 18k solid gold piece is 18k at the surface and 18k in the middle.

How long a plated piece lasts
There is no honest number of years. It depends on the piece and on what you let touch it, and anyone quoting a fixed figure is guessing.
What is predictable is where it goes first. Plating thins at the points of friction. On a ring that is the whole outside of the band, because a ring meets keys, door handles, pockets and the steering wheel every day. On a chain it is mostly the links rubbing against each other, which is gentler, so a plated chain routinely outlasts a plated ring bought on the same day.
What shortens the life is not water. It is chlorine, perfume and aftershave sprayed directly onto the piece, hand cream, and abrasive cleaning products and polishes. Silver polish on a plated piece removes exactly the layer you are trying to keep.
So the care is short. Put the piece on after perfume and cosmetics. Rinse and dry it after chlorine or salt water. Wipe it with a soft dry cloth after wear. Store it flat in its pouch rather than loose in a box, because most scratches happen in storage.
What you are actually paying for
With solid gold you are buying the metal, and the price follows the gold price and the weight. With gold filled you are buying a thicker layer and the labour of bonding it. With plating you are buying the design, the base metal and the finish, and the gold is the smallest part of the cost.
That is why the base metal is the question that matters most in the plated category, and the one most listings avoid. Plating over brass and plating over stainless steel cost roughly the same to make and behave completely differently once the layer thins. On brass, a worn edge means exposed copper alloy, tarnish and a green mark on the skin. On stainless steel, a worn edge means a steel coloured patch and nothing else.
What Atolio Vegas makes, and what we do not
We make 18k gold plated over 316L stainless steel. We do not make gold filled and we do not make solid gold. There is no version of our catalogue where you get either, and it is better to say so here than to let you find out at checkout.
The reasoning is straightforward. We wanted pieces that can be worn daily, bought without ceremony and replaced if they fail, at prices where a chain is EUR 60 and a ring is EUR 50. Gold filled would put the price up without solving the thing we cared most about, which is what happens when the layer does eventually thin.
Stainless steel solves that. 316L is hypoallergenic and tarnish resistant, so the metal under our gold is a metal you would be happy to wear on its own. Every steel version in the range is exactly that piece without the plating.
Gold filled and solid gold are good constructions. If you want an heirloom, a piece you will resize, or something with material resale value, buy solid gold and buy it from someone who specialises in it. We are not competing for that purchase.
Which one you should choose
- Gold colour for daily wear at a sane price. Plated over stainless steel, accepting that the layer has a lifespan.
- Something that will outlive you and be handed on. Solid gold.
- A middle path, and you are happy to hunt for it. Gold filled, from a maker who states the construction clearly.
- You react to cheap alloys. The base metal is the decision, not the gold. 316L is the reason our pieces are hypoallergenic.
- You want the colour never to be an issue. Buy the steel version rather than the gold one. It is the same piece.
What our warranty covers
Jewellery from Atolio Vegas carries a lifetime warranty covering tarnishing, fading and accidental breakage. It applies while the original owner owns the piece and is not transferable. It gives one free replacement per piece, and if a replacement fails too, store credit. A fair use policy applies. It is a voluntary guarantee from us and your statutory rights apply independently of it, free of charge.
Fading is named in that list deliberately, because fading is the honest risk with plating and we would rather carry it than argue about it. What the warranty does not cover is neglected care, deliberate damage and the effect of perfume, cosmetics and cleaning products, which is the short list of things that end a plated finish early.
